So this weekend a bunch of homos marched on Washington and watched Judy Shepherd wave her son's death around like a miniature American flag (perhaps sparkler is a bridge too far...) yet again.

the country legislates "morality" every day in all kinds of instances, whether we like that or not. in a perfect world i might agree that "all crimes are hate crimes," but this isn't that.

federal tax laws reward marriage and organized religion as "good" things the nation wants to promote. i feel neither deserves a reward. until the playing field is levelled, i have no problem and even support the federal laws discouraging bigotry and hate.

I agree that all this voyeuristic stuff has gone too far and become far too acceptable. This Phillips woman cashing in on her alleged abuse as a child is a good example. Public grief quickly turns empathy to adulation, and I think people get so caught up in it they don't realize how much they crave the attention (in addition to the money, if that's involved...I imagine Shepard's turning a buck somehow if she can turn up at things like this).

But all crime being hate crime? That I can't get behind. Crime is motivated as much by greed, ignorance and genuine madness as it is plain old hate. It takes all kinds.
