From my agnostic point of view both are important. Clarity of knowledge informs us that there is no proof of gods exsistance or non-exsistance and that it follows that if we don't know if god is then we can't claim to be sure what god is or should he exist then what he wants of us.
Under such a situation given the enormity of the question, there are good reasons to make working assumptions until there is proof. On that basis it is quite sensible to make a best guess one way or the other based on the available evidence. This people call belief it is also not to bad to have some faith in ones best guess as long as one remembers that is what it is. So truly both are important.
