My summer would be fantastic if it weren't for my advisers. Everyone else's advisers pretty much leave them alone, being in touch about once a week and praising their progress on their research. Mine send me between 5 and 12 emails each day with tiny details about how I should be doing my research, or questions that they've already asked three

Being micromanaged like this sounds intolerable. Can you get in touch with anybody this person has advised in the pass? Maybe they know how to manage this individual.

I don't know how you function in that sort of environment. True advancement can only be achieved by you, not your advisers. Would it be possible to go over your adviser's head and get a new adviser without making enemies?
