Okay, time for the cool post I've been promising. I'm pretty positive that it won't be what you expect, but it's important that you read it anyway. ( Read more... )
It's too bad that India isn't pissing us off right now, so we can't go in and get rid of their government and mess with their social structure and soforth

I hadn't intended to make my two separate links related at all, but you make an interesting point. I think it depends on where you draw the line between tolerating other people, and taking a stand for what's right. I think both can be done in either of these cases, but I Feel like the right thing to do is different in each situation. The situation with Brian Deneke has come and gone, and as such the best thing we can do is to prevent it from happening again. The Dalits in India, however, are in a situation that is ever-present, and something can in fact be done. The Dalit can't get themselves out of their situation...by definition a Dalit must marry a Dalit, will give birth to a Dalit, and will die a Dalit. You can't get out of it. They can't even marry themself out, because it's not only illegal but is considered a form of social pollution. They're literally considered to be a disease

As to the consistency of saying "Tolerance, but not for this": I would say that personally, I'm tolerant of those things which do not harm other people. So if the Dalit liked being in that position, great for them I guess... But that's obviously not going to be the case. Sort of a "Whatever floats your boat, but your right to swing your fist ends at everyone else's face" mixed metaphor.
i would love to spread the word about these suffering people to (at least) the other message boards i post in. could you get an informative link, seeing as i don't know specifics (and i usually lack efficient word usage). my heart goes out to the Dalit people.
You have impuned the greatness of Brian Dennehy, for this unforgivable sin you shall be cast into the pit of eternal hellfire, and your spirit shall suffer the eternal damnation inherent in dissing Brian Dennehy. So put that in your metaphorical pipe and smoke it, homey mcjones WERD.
