P.S. I think "Spring came. Freddie, the leaf, was born on a branch of a tall tree." should be counted among the ranks of the finest opening lines in literature, akin to "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife" or "Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins."
Wow. That was such a very Japanese attitude. The only western author that I know of who presents that companionability of death in a way that approximates the Japanese style is George MacDonald.
