like a doughnut hole?

Notes taken at a mandatory class at St. Joseph Hospital
by Neil McKay

Anger is the icing
On the doughnut of hurt
Depression, of course, is the crème filling.
Passive aggressive behavior is the sprinkles on top
And low self esteem is the chopped nuts throughout.

The reckless use of recreational drugs
Is the glaze on the bearclaw of denial
While casual sex with casual acquaintances
Is the maple frosting on the maple bar of shame

Self-acceptance is a fresh spinach salad
Covered with a generous dollop of the balsamic vinegar of happiness.
And topped with cherry tomatoes that don’t symbolize anything,
But they’re good for you.

Still that maple bar looks pretty good.

I like that poem. The interplay of food and self-esteem emotional ego issues are central to my life drama.
