The phrase "how the hell did this happen?" is thrown around pretty
loosely; but I can safely say in this particular case, "What the hell
just did happen?"
I'll set up a senario for you.
Last year at the end of the semester, I was voted A-#1 as the Slacker
of all the night receptionists. I guess showing up late on regular
basis and missing one night of work completely tend to add up as marks
against a guy. Sometimes it's even worse because you forget about the
meeting where you were supposed to receive the award and end up playing
Source instead of going. I guess that's how I role. Fuck it.
( award not pictured because it's not in my possession )
It's sad how one year later things can change so easily.
I didn't work any harder. If anything, I put less
effort into my job. I haven't fallen asleep working this year
yet, though. That is the one area that I have improved in.
Otherwise, I still show up late and I often just let people in if they
want to create enough trouble for me.
"You don't have your ID card" but you say "I said I'd remember you or
I'd talked to you on another night"; that's cool. Enough
information for me. You get to enter the building.
That's how I do my job. I by no means do a "good" job. I
would rank it somewhere around mediocre, if now slightly below.
Two possibilities:
1) Everyone else does a bad job too ( possible but not likely )
2) People tend to like me because I seem like a bumbling idiot and don't get on anyone's nerves ( more likely )
I would almost vote I won because of pure ignorance of the people who
voted for me. Though I talk to / hang out with some of the night
receptionists whenever I see them, no one ever actually spends the
shift working on my side of the building. No one knows really how
well / poorly I do my job. They tend to take it on face value
that I show up and act like I care when they check doors.
Whatever, though. I know a guy who gets a free sub from Jimmy
John's for winning an award undeservingly. And that ain't bad.
If you didn't notice at first, my hair is now black with dark blue
tinting throughout. Kinda does this cool color change
thing. Thanks again Jenny.
