Bodyguards
Sonar decoys had become their temporary salvation.
Gideon's great-grandmother had created the first one on a laptop, and they had been developed from that. Little robots that flew out ahead of the survivors, slow enough to be distracting, fast enough to just outrun the predators. With the monsters distracted, the humans had a brief opportunity to move.
Afterwards the robots glided back silently, ready for next time their protection was needed. They could fly right past the predators undetected. Not like the dwindling numbers of frightened humans cowering in their underground tunnels, knowing their extinction event was already upon them.
