Connor didn’t have a poker face.
Abby always said that he had a tendency to look guilty even when he wasn’t (and then he’d be in trouble for taking the last chocolate biscuits or similar).
He’d always been rubbish at anything that required any sort of deceit. Cards were out. Even Duncan could beat him at Cheat. Connor had never bothered trying poker.
And yet he had to lie to Burton, pretend that everything was okay.
Burton had tried to kill them all. Burton was working with Helen.
Connor took a deep breath, and steeled himself. He could do this.
