Rain
Rain was both a wonderful and terrible thing.
It would last for days, turning the scorched earth to mud, flooding the underground tunnels. Losing their refuge was bad enough, but worse when some storms fell like acid on their escape hatches and skin. A single drop could blind a man.
There was no washing it off if it touched you. Clean water was too precious for that, the process used to purify the filthy, poisonous rainwater incredibly slow.
They kept under cover, waiting for the return of the drought.
But if that rain never came again, they would all die.
