It was strange what went through his mind at the end.
Stephen had always liked old westerns, the foolish heroism of Butch and Sundance's theatrical ending had always had a certain appeal no matter how far removed from reality it was.
Standing there alone, he felt like Gary Cooper. But he hadn't got a gun.
He waited. The nearest thing he had to Grace Kelly had died in the Permian so nobody was going to return out of love and save him.
He clung to the slender hope that maybe, when it was over, somehow they would be together again.
