Q: Can a human cell line be patented?

A: In 1995 an indigenous man of the Hagahai people from Papua New Guinea had cells thata became Patent No. 5,397,696. The National Institutes of Heal obtained the patent on the cells, and the foreign citizen essentially ceased to own his genetic material.
