The last Pete Seeger shows we watched featured (a very young) Doc Watson exhibiting his fine flat picking style.  I love Doc Watson and became aware of him along with the Carter Family, and the new Lost City Ramblers when I hooked up with Richard.  Before that I was a main stream music listener.   ( although I admit to stealing my father's Glen ( Read more... )

Doc Watson is like my all-time hero in life and music.

He is the sweetest, smartest, humblest and most perceptive old guy and of course the best flatpicker ever to pick up a Martin. People think more often of the "southern redneck" stereotype--Doc is the other one, the ultimate Southern gentleman.

Once I saw him jamming with Bill Monroe (Carlyle Bluegrass Fest, late 70's). Yee ha.

The last time I saw him he had Sam Bush playing with him--my favourite mandolin player in the world.

I think he's in his late seventies now, semi-retired but still performing occasionally.

I saw Doc play at the Rainbow in Ottawa late 83...and later that summer at a fest near Renfrew. He played with his son at the fest and pretty much solo at the Rainbow. He truly is a Southern Gentleman, I met him coming up the stairs and requested he play Shady Grove and he remembered to do so. I was beyond thrilled. I love that song...it has many memories for me. I almost called Sarah "Shady" after that song.
I was reading an article about Pete Seeger and his reaction to Dylan going electric at the Newport Folk Festival. Nice to know my hero is human too...
