I wonder if the wine symbolism is supposed to be Hannibal saying that it's not an either/or thing? But I'm not sure what the either/or is supposed to be. Hmmm.

That was my thinking. It came right after she said she wasn't his friend and laid down the line between "therapist" and "colleague." He wants a relationship -- with her, with anyone -- that bridges the gap between "person I have intellectual/professional interactions with" and "person I (theoretically) expose my emotional landscape to."

I was thinking it was something like "somewhere in the middle of two extremes," although nothing quite as articulate as what y'all are saying, but I didn't know if the colors were supposed to mean something particular, and I'd already blathered on enough as it was at that point. I wonder if basically it's reiterating his complete disregard of anyone else's boundaries, given that he wants to be everyone's coworker AND therapist AND friend AND hook up with Alana AND be Abigail's surrogate father. Please, with your "red or white," we are sloshing this aaaaall together.

YES. I think you're right. And of course he then goes on to drink rosé around Will. (Dare you drink the pink wine of understanding, Will?)

Though I feel in danger of falling into woobie!Hannibal territory, it's almost sad that he can't have that combination, because anybody who gets the full Hannibal experience is going to find out about those unfortunate little incidents in his past.

I think it's an interesting color to keep in the overall palette, as it were. It's just that you also have to acknowledge the massive amount of red as well.
