Hannibal 1x11: "Rôti"

Y'all know I adore this show, right? You know I love shaking my fist and throwing things at the villainous villainy that is the reason we are all actually here? I just want to be clear about that before I start yelling my head off.

Disturbing content, Eddie Izzard, Gillian Anderson, RAGE )

Haven't had this much fun with recaps since Todd Alcott's analyses of The Venture Bros... Hee ( ... )

I was watching old episodes of Gordon Ramsey's The F word this morning. I had to stop watching -- he gets 6 turkeys and lets his kids raise them (and name them and love them) in anticipation of their being slaughtered for Christmas dinner. That is ethical for him -- turkeys are made to be eaten. I believe hannibal feels that way about Will.

Interestingly enough, the only person I have seen who might be a peer to Hannibal would be
the Gillian Anderson character. Neither Will nor Alana nor Abby are in Hannibal's league, which means they can be treated like Ramsay treated his turkeys.

As long as the kids know that's the eventual destiny of their turkeys, that's hardly a huge problem. I know plenty of current and former farm kids, and they have no problem viewing an animal as both a current quasi-pet and as future food. And it means the animals are well-treated and happy during their lives, and they usually get a quick, painless, unexpected death. Personally, I feel much better about meat that's been named and loved. Unless it's people, obviously.

Bit of a tangent, but there we are.

His Lecter is hitting my devil-on-film buttons hard. It adds whole big layers of yes if you watch episodes thinking of him as not just manipulating but tempting characters.

Wondering if maybe Lecter, while saying Graham is his friend, sees him more as... a pet. Not quite domesticated.

Like a stray dog picked up off the road?

Heh. Lecter grooms his a bit more, though.

Oh, did they really go in for scans, then? I kept wondering how they did the credits, and whose faces, if anyone's, we were looking at.

This seems to be accented by the lighting, maybe makeup, and, well, just look at that face. How his eyes are set in his sockets suggest the eyeholes of a mask.

I think the high cheekbones do a lot. He just looks so, so different depending on what angle they shoot him from and how they've done his makeup. Hair more natural, a bit over his face, higher angle: perfectly good-looking guy. Throw in a smile, downright charming. Hair back with all the evil combed in, lower angle: SEPULCHRAL. (Actually, a bit young Christopher Lee, kind of.) I think they know exactly how to shoot him and when.
