Things you think about if you're me

Okay. I'm kind of sick today (chills, aches, low fever, sinus snarf), so maybe I'm a little loopy, I don't know, but I finally convinced myself to expend the energy to heat some soup, and while I was pacing around waiting for it to get hot, I started thinking about basic plot conflicts. In essence, everything starts with desire: a character wants ( Read more... )

Despite the cold medicine (or maybe because of it) one of the most lucid and interesting essays on how desire motivates plot movement and character development I've ever read.

And I think the Glass of Water thing originally came from Robert McKee's 'Story', but I could be wrong...

Since I'm going to be borrowing that book from my son soon, I'll keep my eyes open for it...

...so I can sporfle as I think back on this post, of course. Heh.

A sporfle will probably help you get through it. It's a bit...dense, shall we say? I've actually got it next to me now, but I'm darned if I'm trawling through all 600 pages to check!

At the wise old age of 17, my son loftily declared that he already knew about most of what was in the book, yet it still had "some value."

Sigh. He'll learn humility. Some day. I hope.

(He wants to learn about storytelling as pertains to video game development. I want to make my webcomic better, and possibly write some actual stories with words and everything, like they used to do in the olden times...)

Wow, he must be a much better educated 17 year old than I was! I just read it myself and there were definitely new ways of looking at things in it.

As regards actual stories with Ye Olde Wordes - the book has really helped me to plot out my next novel, in terms of structure. I usually struggle with saggy middles (don't we all) and I think 'Story' might have fixed that. So - yay!
