Travel Plans

"Sam-an-tha..."

Oh boy.  Any time Vala sings my name out like that, I just know I'm going to get talked into something my credit card will later regret.  The shopping spree in Denver... the spa vacation in Tucson... the Wormhole X-treme virtual experience in Seattle.

Wait... the last one was my idea.

"Va-la," I answer in kind, not looking up from my laptop.  And I was so close to having this program debugged, too!

"Let's go see Wicked, darling," she announces.  Coming up from behind me, she wraps her arms enthusiastically around my waist and hooks her chin over my shoulder.

"Wicked?"  Suddenly, I have this bizarre vision in my head of me dressed as Glinda, and Vala rocking the green face-paint of Elphaba.

My very own Orion slave girl... oh, that's hot.

"It's a musical featuring two very intelligent and beautiful female leads," she answers, mistaking my rhetorical response for confusion.

"I've heard of it," I answer quickly, closing the laptop so I can give her my full attention.  Vala's fingers tend to wander distractedly if I don't, and since we're supposed to leave in a half hour to meet Cam and Daniel for dinner, I don't want her to start anything we can't finish yet.  "We'll have to check when it's in Denver next."

Vala scrunches her nose up and shakes her head.  "Not in Denver... on Broadway."

"Broadway?!"  I should've known!  "You want to see it on Broadway?!"

She looks offended.  "According to Muscles, that's truly the only way to see a Broadway musical.  Although, I'm still confused as to why he went to New York to see Chicago..."

"Chicago's another musical."

"I thought it was another city."

I love her, but I want to strangle her!  "The musical is named for the city."

"Oh!  Well, maybe we could go see that, too."

"Vala," I sigh.  "Broadway tickets to a show like Wicked cost about hundred bucks each."

She deflates and sits down on the dining chair to my right.  "Oh... so only one show, then, else we won't have any money to go shopping."

Well, of course.  Can't visit New York without going shopping, can we?  I mean, I do occasionally enjoy retail therapy, but I don't get as much out of it as Vala does.  I think what I enjoy more than anything is the way she gets all girly and silly over the least little thing, and how it makes all the shadows in her eyes disappear for hours.

Shopping it is.

"I think the first place we should go is Tiffany's-we'll have breakfast there-and look at the rings.  After that, we can go to H & S and look at all the dresses.  I checked the internet, and we have to have an appointment for a fitting, but we can book that after we have our tickets."

"Rings?  Dresses?"  Then it hits me.  "You want to go to New York to get married?"

Vala beams, delighted I've caught on.  "Of course!  Haven't you watched the news lately?"

The protests, the drawn-out debates... yeah, I'd seen it, but it hadn't exactly registered what it meant.  Of course, "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" was still officially in effect, but it was a dead issue no one was bothering to enforce any more now that all the required "sensitivity" training had been conducted.  Heck, Daniel and Cam didn't even bother to hide their relationship any more, much to the dismay of practically every woman on base-and not a few equally-disappointed men.

"Well," I begin, leaning forward to take Vala's hands in my own.  "I've always wanted to see Times Square."
