I had to go into the business building today. I have total contempt for that place. You can smell the greed. I got back to the library as quickly as I could. I'm going to the 3rd floor to surround myself with history and philosophy books in an attempt to wash the stench off. Man I hate that place anymore ( Read more... )

Well, seeing as I have graduated college with a liberal arts degree and could only land a part time teaching job, and have watched several friends struggle similarly, I am more inclined to see where these people are coming from. I mean, isn't it feasable to work in business and retain ethics? What if you just want to see real estate or something to have a reasonable income, but don't have aspirations to climb up the corporate ladder and make three figure salaries? True, I haven't really met anyone in business who didn't have that aspiration, but I am banking on the assumption that they must exist somewhere.

Don't get me wrong here, there are good people in business. Dennis Barsema himself is actually a really good guy, but it seems to me those people become what they are in spite of what the business school teaches. Basically I'd have no problem with the business school if they forced you, or even gave you the chance really, to get a general academic education as well. Once you're in UBus 210 or whatever it is, that's it you're learning asset-to-debt ratios and fluid assests. There's no room in a business education for a real education. I also have this, probably untrue, idea that business school is basically where kids who have no real intrest in advanced education go because they're parents are making them go somewhere.

And please, keep all horror stories of job searching to yourself. I'm just entering the process myself and have managed to have some optimism, don't kill it while it's young.
