as⋅sas⋅si⋅nate /əˈsæsəˌneɪt/ [uh-sas-uh-neyt] -verb (used with object), -nat⋅ed, -nat⋅ing. 1. to kill suddenly or secretively, esp. a politically prominent person; murder premeditatedly and treacherously.
Calling it an assassination is misrepresenting what happened.
That said it is unfortunate he was murdered and hope the strong fist of the law comes down on the assailant.
Tiller was apparently politically prominent. According to something I heard on local NPR affiliate WCPN, Tiller was involved in a very large political lobby in the state of Kansas, advocating for abortion rights. I believe they said on the radio that his group was/is the second-largest political lobby in the State of Kansas. (Which, just goes to show, there's an awful lot of people out there who supported the lobby).
So, anyway, "assassinate" is probably not an inappropriate term to use for his murder.
