Harper was pretty frantic when she arrived. "Ohmygosh," she gasped, struggling to catch her breath. "There's some really creepy things out there!"

"Quite a few," Agnes agreed. "Don't let them bite you."

"Yuuuuuck!" squealed Harper. "No, I won't let them do that. They might get that icky oozy stuff on my clothes."

"Yes, because that's exactly the part that I should be worried about," Agnes told her.

She hadn't meant to say that out loud, but just now she didn't have the energy to gasp in horror and clap her hands over her mouth.

If there was a subtle insult in there, Harper didn't get it in her panicked state of mind.

"First harpies, and now zombies! What else could possibly happen?" she cried.

Agnes shrugged. "Just about anything, apparently, if the stories are to be believed."

"They should put a warning in the brochure!" exclaimed Harper.

"It would seem there are," Miss Bennet agreed, quite nervously. "Are you unhurt? Have you safe passage to return this evening?"

"I'm okay. I just ran really, really fast," said Harper, out of breath. She had no idea she could even run like that.

"I really hadn't thought about how I'll get back to the dorms tonight," she added, worried.

"Forgive me if this sounds terribly improper," Miss Bennet said, "but this house has many guest rooms. On behalf of Miss Boxer, I should like to extend you an invitation to stay the evening, that your return travel might be by the safety of daylight."

She had no right to speak on Miss Boxer's behalf, formally, but Eliza was practical. This girl could be in terrible danger; social graces had never accounted for events such as zombie invasions.

"That sounds like a much better idea than taking my chances in the dark. Thank you, Miss Bennet! I'd be happy to stay here tonight," said Harper, looking relieved.

"Not at all," Miss Bennet said, bowing quite properly. "Once we've finished sewing, I can show you to one of the bedrooms. One hopes the journey back will be easier by daylight. If you wish an escort for your trip back, I would walk with you, if you do not mind waiting until class."

Not that Miss Bennet herself was any great hand with zombies, but two were always safer than one, and she might see if she could find a weapon of some variety.

"I wouldn't mind waiting until class if it means staying safe from zombies," said Harper, shuddering slightly at the thought of walking back on her own.
