Nov 12, 2005 15:35

i dunno about anyone else, but having part of the story in the memories in comments is confusing me, so, I'm updating this part from the end of the actual post of Part 19, to the last comment installment.

Martha was watching Clark with amused concern. He was so energetic and clearly happy now, but his moods had been so erratic and tentative throughout the day that she was beginning to worry ( ... )

"I guess, well, pretty much since…well, since I met Lex actually.” Clark was puzzled by this realisation, confusion clouding his eyes. But he quickly spotted how Lex could be blamed, and was quick to add -“But it’s not Lex’s fault! He doesn’t give me them - he normally helps them go away!”

The tiniest shred of hope that she was wrong dispersed at that statement, although there was no outward recognition of this as Martha softly asked…

"Since you met Lex?"

Clark nodded quickly but rushed to say "But, it really isn't his fault. Alot of the time, he isn't even around when it starts to hurt."

Martha shook her head with concern. Considering everything that had happened since Clark met Lex, it was easy to understand why Clark might have developed a nervous stomach.

"Why didn't you tell us?"

His shrug was so teen-ager that Martha had to smile.

"It's just a stomachache."

Martha wasn't so sure about that... it seemed like more than a stomachache that afternoon.

"How does Lex help them go away?"

Martha could not help the slightly accusatory lilt in that question, something Clark obviously heard, if his blush was anything to go by. However, he was quick to defend his friend.

“No Mom, nothing like that! Lex would never take advantage like that! It’s just, when I got upset or something, and got a stomach-ache, I’d just feel like I needed to see Lex, so I’d go over, and he’d drop everything like always, and he’d just, be there. Always made me feel better. It didn’t matter if we didn’t speak the whole time, we could just play pool, watch TV. Just his presence seemed to make everything better. But when I needed to talk, when everything just gets a bit much - like today, Lex was always ready to listen, regardless of the fact that I could never explain fully what was up, never tell him the whole story. He…

Clark blushed at the thought, but regardless of his embarrassment, he knew he needed to answer his mother.

“I don’t know Mom, I really don’t. All I do know is, that I can’t not have him in my life. I mean, in the summer, when he…when we thought…” Clark drifted off, choked at the thought.

“When he was declared dead?” Martha filled in softly.

Clark nodded, and sniffed before continuing, “Yeah, then, I know I wasn’t myself at the time, but it hurt. It hurt so much! And if thinking he was gone, thinking I’d never see him again, caused me that much pain when I was Kal, imagine how it would have felt if I had been myself. I need him in my live Mom - I don’t know if I could live without him.”
At that, Clark finally glanced up at his mother, but seeing the pain on her face, he just turned his gaze back to the floor, and whispered, “I’m sorry.”

hmmm. I thought we were set a little bit earlier than this, in the months after they first met.

i think this is basically AU, I mean, they appear not to have been friends all that long, but the stuff about lionel bugging the house is from later in the series.
I think, with it being a story shared between a bunch of people, setting it exactly in one part of the series is a bit difficult. We all seem to be picking up certain parts of certain episodes - regardless of which season they're from. however, i think it kinda works!
