Later, when Martha had retired for the night and Lex was on the road back to Metropolis, Clark heard a rapping at his door and he followed the silent signals his host gave him to follow down the hall.

Once having entered a large library, Bruce turned and said, “I am satisfied with your status, as stated.”

Clark frowned a bit then said with some ( Read more... )

"Kent! ... Kent! Snap out of it!" Bruce tried to order, completely unprepared for the teen's erratic emotional swings. He'd never had this difficulty with Dick... even in the depths of grief over his family's murder. There had been mood swings certainly, but never this erratic. The boy seemed as if he was controlled by a thousand switches randomly flipping on and off: first panicked, then unnervingly calm, then clinging, then he locking himself away, then run away from his family, then he was back and angry, then terrified, then suspicious, then trusting, then intimidating, then childlike and awed, then suicidal ( ... )

Suddenly several things clicked into place in Bruce's mind. Clark was an alien. Clark came down in a meteor shower. The very meteor shower that was responsible for so many mutated humans. A meteor shower that took Lex's hair and asthma and seemed to have granted him some sort of immunity from common diseases coupled with rapid healing. A meteor shower that this cowering young man seemed to not only accept responsibility for, ridiculous considering his age upon arrival, but this... this was the underlying guilt that pushed him into believing he deserved whatever pain that he was dealt as punishment for his self perceived crimes ( ... )

"Clark." Lex responded in the most unemotional voice he could manage, even though he practically wanted to rip Bruce apart limb from limb. How dare he... How dare he think he could do his version of battlefield psychology on Clark without letting Lex, much less the Kents know what was going on. Simply because Clark had finally admitted that he was an alien did not mean that you could manhandle him as though he weren't fragile and had not been through the most excruciating of circumstances only a week before ( ... )

"Let me tell you a story, Clark..." Lex paused as Clark leaned into his shoulder, laying a cheek against his chest when Lex pulled the arm around the teen's broad shoulders into a closer circle - a hug really - then began again: Once upon a time ( ... )
