Alfred's calming influence and tendency to present matters in neutrality, for the first time in either Bruce or Lex's memory fell flat as Clark reacted abruptly to Alfred's assertion that the was not responsible or the target.

"Y-yo-u d-do-n't un-derst-and. Edge... he said... the told me that he wouldn't... he wasn't going to give me back. Not to Lionel, not to Dominic... or Lex. He-h-e was going to doublecross them be-cause... h-he w-a-nted... he wa-nts..." Clark shuddered and trailed off as Bruce and Alfred exchanged glances.

Edge was too smart to boast of such dangerous matters; if Edge made the comment, he intended to follow through,and if Edge was willing to go against Lionel....

If Edge was willing to go against Lionel, the man was truly insane... as in rivaling the Joker insane, and if Clark was the target of his obsession - Clark would not be safe until Edge was confirmed dead, dna tested for identity confirmation, and creamated less than a second after his identity was confirmed. The man had escaped too many inescapable situations only to turn and wreck havoc on everyone involved.

That truth was lingering in Lex, Bruce, and Alfred's eyes as they shared looks of knowing consternation. Catching their shared expression, Dick thought he understood what it portended, but Clark...

Catching their shared expression, Dick thought he understood what it portended, but Clark was oblivious to this byplay, already lost in the horror that was his own memories of Edge.

Unable to stop himself from shaking, Clark backed up until he was against the nearest wall, before sliding to the floor and wrapping his arms around his knees, hiding his face. Clark was shaking; not only at the memories, but at the resurgence of fear at the very thought of being under Edge's control once again.

At Clark's drop to the floor, the attention of the room was once again focused upon him, and...

At Clark's drop to the floor, the attention of the room was once again focused upon him, and Dick felt his throat tighten at the looks that passed between Lex and Bruce before Lex quietly knelt beside Clark. He had seen Bruce and Alfred share that look several times before. More often than not- the best case scenario for the subject of the glance was to end up with a very extended stay in the hospital, and that was usually only due to an unexpected break in the case. In the handful of cases where an unexpected break eluded them, they ended up attending funerals
