Actually the first ice cream cones, if I recall correctly, were improvised from waffles... as a means of serving ice cream at a baseball game.

It was at the St. Louis Worlds Fair in 1904. There was a waffle booth was next to an ice cream vendor who ran short of dishes. The waffle booth guy rolled a waffle to contain the ice cream and the cone was born.
