Coming...Home?

This is so odd. Caught somewhere between strikingly new and yet strangely familiar. Granted, it's a new dorm, new people, new program, etc., but yet there's something odd about coming out of a 2 hour international orientation where they explain very slowly and clearly that a British pound is divided into 100 pence and knowing exactly where to go ( Read more... )

I do almost feel like I'm contributing to some sort of infectious disease of Americans in England. I was at the international orientation and you should have seen the number of hands that shot up when they asked who was from the US. I guess our numbers depend on the particular program/department, but so far as I can tell ever chemist/physicist/biologist for the next 5 years in the States will have been educated over here. I haven't (yet) met any Americans in history, but we'll see in the next few days...
How is the big T.O? Still warm? It's literally freezing over here! And I thought I was all prepared for English cold after my year in Canada...

Your window view is gorgeous! I didn't realize you'd been at Oxford before.

Hey Molly! How is Berkeley treating you? Enjoying sunny CA weather? I have to say, I did luck out as far as my window orientation, a friend who lives below me gets treated to naked men every morning who forget to shut their blinds. Makes for quite a wake-up call. I was in Oxford during my undergrad years for a medieval program and, well, fell in love with the place and somehow finagled my way to get back here asap. ;-)

Hey Peter! How goes life in TO? Are you still at Massey? I have to say, I heartily approve of the massive desk size they seem to be bestowing upon graduate students. It's almost as if they know that we will quickly fill it with things of a non-academic nature. Mine does seem a perpetual host to dirty dishes as well and that coke can featured prominently in the picture has yet to migrate to a recycle bin. It'll get there eventually. Dude, I would totally take you up on that bowling idea, if these crazy Brits had anything resembling a bowling alley. And there is no way I'm learning how to play cricket. I had no idea that Talia wasn't coming back to the Centre, did she decide to do her phd somewhere else? Anyways, let me know what you're up to, it's great to hear from you!

Yes, it would only be fittingly ironic if you chose THIS location out of the other choices to come visit. I knew I couldn't tempt you with a SoCal beach or a Canadian metropolis, but dammit if the old academic British city doesn't do it, nothing will. Remember, a free welcoming bed/floor will always be available after a 5 hour plane ride over a rather large pond. Always.

Nice room. Looks like JMH has a very nice view. Anyway, I hope I can see you around in College.
