OMFG! thats ridiculous! Who is running the education departments network? Go tell them they're fucking imbeciles! There's this thing on network switches called VLANS, that enables you to seperate LAN's into Virtual LANs so you can provide different levels of access for different users. For instance at Christ Church we had a staff and student VLAN (among others). Student VLAN was heavily restricted while the staff VLAN was more permissive. Also by using MAC address ACL's on our web proxy, different staff had different web access levels. So for instance the general academic staff couldn't get pornography, but the principal could.

In the meantime, try an anonymising proxy to tunnel through their restrictions. Theres a huge list here:

it's a government iniative which i guess is an advantage of having an indipendant school. they don't operate with the group though of a education minister in election mode with a internet crisis on there hands. also our school does not have a full time network admin person. they hvae a teacher on SSO wage that does most of the day to day action but the rest is pretty loose. that's why they have a committee structure to improve the schools ICT use. Of which i am a member. its a good deal for me. Has your school got interactive Whiteboards yet?
