I dread doing plumbing! Non-standard situations like you had to deal with come up all too often, and finding specialized parts can be a nightmare. It sounds like you have found a workable solution, so ...Congratulations!

Werlll, I can't say it worked PERFECTLY, but it works. The pressure drop caused by turning on the shower is still not enough to kick on the water heater by itself, but if you then turn the sink on for just a moment (long enough for the heater to come on), the heater stays on and you can take a shower.

What a pain in the ass this all is!
