There's a house up the street from me that was paneled vertically with 1/2" tongue and groove boards that they are stripping off and throwing out, so I grabbed some and I'm using them to rebuild my side gate pergola.  I'm planning on grabbing more because old cedar seems like it would be pretty expensive.

Yeah, cedar is awfully pricy these days, so that free lumber is a lucky find. Cedar is notorious for shedding paint, but it usually weathers nicely if you don't paint it. My picket fences are made of recycled fir porch floor boards. I have re-floored a lot of old porches over the years. Typically the old flooring is only rotted at the ends, so there is still plenty of good wood to reuse, and fir holds up well to the weather if the end-grain is sealed well. For rails and posts I always use pressure-treated lumber. I am looking forward to seeing the finished result!
