I should empathize with the lack of empathy? buh?clockworxJune 14 2005, 02:43:30 UTC
Anyways, there's a time to call a spade a spade and just say "That's a shitty way to act". I understand that sometimes people have rough lives and/or a bad day, etc, etc, but exactly what sort of situation justifies that sort of behavior?

The way to fight intolerence is not by being intolerant, that is all.
I'm sure you know more than I do what exactly you meant by "Why I hate people", but it just comes off as a bit harsh. By the story it sounds like the comment was just made harmlessly anyway, I doubt the comment will have far-reaching moral implications for his children's values. Hate can just be a very strong word.
Thanks for letting me through the screening process, BTW. :)

No, it pretty much means I hate people...or maybe I should say I hate stupid people...or that I just hate stupidity.
I wouldn't say that his comment means with 100% certainty that his children will end up as unsympathetic and narrow-minded person as he is, but I don't see any productive end to it. In my original post, I attempted to put the comment in the context which I saw it. In these days of rah-rah, mindless patriotism where we "support our troops!", it is important to remember that there are multiple sides to a conflict, and that we should take the higher ground and treat their POWs as we would like ours to be treated. Or...you know...at least not parade them around in underwear, tape electrodes to their genitals, and all have a good laugh about it over breakfast.
