Isn't the new film the Chinese Opera version?

Welllll, I would certainly call it a steampunk riff on the theme of The Three Musketeers, rather than an adaptation. It pillaged a certain amount of the slapstick and dropped quite a few of the particularly uncomfortable aspects of Milady's character. As a piece of glossy Hollywood ridiculousness, I enjoyed it a lot.

I only saw the trailer, but it looked like it had gone over completely to Hong Kong Kung Fu movie style wire work, which, as I understand, descends form the practices of Chinese opera.

Ah, I see. I don't know enough (read: nothing) about this to comment, unfortunately.

It's good fun! Definitely had everything I ask for in a film (but then, I make a point of not using my brain outside work, so my standards tend to be a bit idiosyncratic).
