altitude sickness or vertigo part 2 or some other height related title idk idk lelz

"It's great up here, don't you think?"

Minho's voice sounds far-off and tinny in the rising altitude, but Kibum can only guess about his proximity when his eyes are shut tight. Minho can't be sitting more than a few inches away from him, but the only measurement Kibum is aware of is the distance between his feet and solid ground.

The five of them were shipped off to Everland for another cheesy shoot decked in obnoxiously loud clothes. Normally, Kibum would have relished in the free trip and the fanfare, but when the shoot director decided to have him and Minho pose suggestively on a ferris wheel gondola, he was filled with a sense of dread that sank to the bottom of his stomach, as if gravity wouldn't be enough to keep him down. Sure enough, Taemin or Jonghyu - either way, a dead man - managed to grab hold of the controls and sent the previously dormant ferris wheel into full tilt. The motor whirred furiously and Minho and Kibum were sent spinning into the sky, mid-flash of the camera.

Their ascent wasn't so bad. Kibum was too shocked and outraged to let his fear of heights settle. The outpouring of vitriol lost its effect as his voice grew tinnier and tinnier as they went higher and higher. By the time Kibum realized his pleas were in vain, he shut his eyes and knew he'd have to (quite literally) just ride this ordeal out.

Then, when they were at the very top, the ferris wheel ground to a halt.

At this point, Minho's voice barely registers above the neurotic pandemonium rioting through Kibum's mind. He can only sense the crease where his eyes have screwed shut, the small wrinkle that's sure to be forming in between his eyebrows, the trenches being carved at the ends of his eyes. Kibum can't worry about being picture perfect right now, when he's in a rickety tin box suspended how many millions of feet into the air! Kibum wants nothing more than to be back on solid ground.

"You can see the whole park from here!" Kibum can picture Minho stretching his long arms outward, sweeping over the place like he owns it. The movement sends a jolt through the gondola and Kibum's grip on the safety bar tightens.

In his mind's eye, Kibum can only see the rusty bar he's clinging onto for dear life. There's rust all over this poorly-engineered death machine. In its hinges, its gears, all of its screws. The developers of this amusement park surely cut corners and the extra million won that should have gone to rust-proofing this abomination of engineering went to something stupid and useless like fish ponds or ornamental trees.

"And the air feels so clean and fresh," Kibum hears Minho inhale and exhale with relish. He can imagine him throwing his hair back, the unruly, yet manicured mass of it unfurling in the wind like smoke from a candle. He's tempted to crack his eyes open for a peek, but a particularly menacing gust of wind sends their gondola's hinges swinging and creaking and a mixture of anxiety and cold creeps over his skin, dousing him in ice-cold fear.

"I love it up here," Minho says, and Kibum swears he can feel him creeping closer. Battling the cold is a growing warmth that is unmistakably Minho and Kibum feels it first where their thighs press together, then it lines his body, from ankle to shoulder. "But you know what my favorite part of all of this is?"

Kibum's mouth is dry. It's only occurred to him now that he's in need of it. He unclenches his jaw and makes certain not to stutter. "What is it?"

"It's just you and me," Minho says. "Nothing here to stop me from doing this -"

Eyes still shut, Kibum can see Minho lean into those final few inches between them. He can see the two of them smiling into the kiss, feel his hands unclench around the safety bar and his fingers intertwine with Minho. Their ankles interlock and Kibum notices with a distracted whisp of a thought that Minho's lifted him onto his lap. All mental terror and physical discomfort blur beyond Minho's mouth, hot and wet against his. Kibum realizes he's holding on to a boy and nothing else. He's never felt more grounded.

Kibum wants nothing more than to stay up here forever.
