Captain Awesome

Apr 27, 2011 19:44

I am too lazy to actually write anything out so here you go.
It's about two ridiculously hot people that should be together but aren't because the world is a cruel, cruel place.

The last time he saw her, she was leaving on a plane without telling him where she was going.

The time before that they were actually working together. That was in Barcelona during the summer of a year he wanted to forget for a number of reasons - the main one being that she drove him insane.

This time he saw her here.

At the Buy More. Talking to his girlfriend’s kid brother. In Burbank.

It didn’t take a genius or a spy to figure out that she wasn’t there without an ulterior motive but just gaping at her from a distance wasn’t going to tell him an inkling about what her motivations were.

As it was, he was already on strained relations with his direct supervisor so asking him wasn’t exactly a viable option; the only efficient one left was the most direct.

“Hey there, Chuck! How’s it going, bro?”

“Oh, uh, hey, hey, Awesome! I didn’t know you were, uh, gonna come by today.”

If Chuck wasn’t already stumbling over his words talking to her, the little intrusion made sure of it.

“Yeah, I actually decided last minute to drop by after my shift at the hospital. My headphones blew out last workout and I just needed a new pair.”

“Oh, oh! Yeah, hold up, I’ll get it.”

“Don’t worry bout it, buddy. It’s cool, I just wanted to say ‘hi’ I didn’t mean to crash on you and…”

He gestured to her while Chuck collected his thoughts, “oh! Right, right, right. Awesome, this is Sarah. Sarah this is my brother’s girlfriend - I mean sister’s boyfriend, Awesome.”

“Awesome?” she asked, the question directed more towards Chuck than him.

“Well, Captain Awesome. Well, no, I mean. That’s not his actual name, you see, I just call him Captain Awesome. So he’s, his, his name is actually, uh -“

“I’m Devon, Devon Woodcomb…it’s nice to meet you, Sarah.”

Although he shook her hand cordially, the look on his face was a clear indication of how he really felt about running into her again. She followed the same suit.

“You, too, Captain Awesome.”

“Did you run into any problems?”

“Not exactly, no.”

“Good, stick with the plan. You’ll be out of there in no time.”

“Was I the only one sent here?”

“Yes, you’re more than capable of attaining the asset on your own. Why? Did you run into someone?”

“No, no. Nothing like that, sir. I was just wondering.”

“You sure?”

“Positive.”

When Devon made it home, Ellie’s already there setting the table for dinner.

“Hey, babe. Sorry, I didn’t call you. I stopped by the Buy More to pick up a new set of headphones.”

“Oh, don’t worry about it, honey. Chuck called earlier to tell me he wasn’t eating dinner with us, he told me you just left the store.”

He headed to the bedroom to put away his stuff and change out of his scrubs. Walking out of the room, he pulled the rest of his shirt over his head while he contemplated what he just heard.

“Chuck’s not coming to dinner?”

“Nope. Guess what he is doing though!”

Devon’s brow furrowed as he took a taste of the lasagna on the table. Right now his mind was wandering around with thoughts that were completely irrelevant to Chuck but he had a suspicion about what she was up to.

“Something exciting, I hope.”

Ellie joined him at the table.

“He’s going out on a date with this girl he met at the Buy More! I can’t remember her name tho-“

“Sarah.”

“Yeah! That’s it! How did you know?”

He shrugged.

“I ran into them at the store. She seems like a nice girl.”

“Let’s hope so. I can’t stand another day of that boy wallowing over Jill.”

“Donovan.”

“Woodcomb. What can I do for you?”

“Sarah Walker is in Burbank.”

“I’m sorry?”

“Quit playing with me. If she’s here, you of all people are going to know about it. She’s not someone who goes under the radar without making at least one blip somewhere.”

“The same Walker that handed you your ass and left you?”

“Are you going to tell me what you know or are you just going to be a little bastard?”

“Alright, geeze. Rumor has it she’s there for the Intersect. Shit got stolen and the files were exported. They think it’s in some guy’s head.”

“So what is she doing here? Cleaning up? “

“For now, that’s what it looks like.”

“So…you and Devon…”

“Hm?” he looked up from his ice cream, “Awesome? What about him?”

She chuckled and took another bite of mint chocolate chip.

“Well for starters, why Captain Awesome?”

He laughed this time.

“Because, you know, everything he does is awesome. That’s kind of just the guy he is. He is Captain Awesome.”

“I see…”

“It’s hard to explain. Sorry.”

“No, it’s alright, Chuck. I get it.”

It was four years since she last saw him - four and a half since the last time she saw him and they were still on speaking terms.

When she saw him at the Buy More he couldn’t have made it more clear that he was still mad at her if he said it out loud.

Sarah couldn’t complain much.

Most of the rift between them was her doing. She didn’t blame him for hating her.

It was ironic now that she was standing on the other side of the fence now, waiting for him. She didn’t know if he would show up; she didn’t know what to expect.

If he didn’t come, she deserved it. If he did, she wasn’t sure how she’d start.

Before she could make up her mind about her spur of the moment idea, a car door slamming shut interrupted her thoughts.

When she turned around to see where it came from, she could make out his silhouette walking towards her in the dim lighting at the park. She met him halfway.

“I wasn’t sure you were coming.”

He didn’t say a word. Instead he chose to stand there, looking down at her. His eyes glared at her with unmistakable anger.

“I didn’t know you were -“

“Why?”

That’s all he said. One word and she didn’t know what to do with herself anymore. She wasn’t so much nervous as she was afraid of what she was going to say.

“They sent me to look out for -“

“I know why you’re here, I’m not stupid. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out you’re here for the Intersect. I’m talking about that stunt you pulled last time.”

The truth was something she wanted to tell him but the other side of the truth was that she didn’t want to hurt him anymore than she already did.

“I…” she sighed. She was stuck between a rock and a hard place with the only person who was capable of helping her out certainly wasn’t going to.

“I had to do it.”

“Bullshit.”

He didn’t even try to hide the bitterness in his voice. As he began to turn away, she grabbed him back.

“It’s true.”

“Is that seriously the best you got, Walker? You’re going to nearly get me killed every which way, run off with me and then leave without saying a God damn word and you’re going to look me in the eye and tell me that you had to? That’s it?”

He pulled himself out of her grasp and ran a hand through his hair.

Even in the lack of light, she could tell there were tears; she could feel her own building up.

“Do you even know what you did to me?”

“I know! Okay, I’ve always known and it’s always killed me! I can barely look at myself sometimes because when I do I feel like a piece of shit because I remember everything I did, but I would do it all over again the same exact way if I had a chance.”

“So that’s that? I meant so little to you that you would do all this again. You know what you did and you don’t even care.”

Their voices were raised but neither were too loud for them to cause suspicion from anyone in close proximity.

“I did care - I still care, Devon. But -“

“But what? You better damn well have something good because you’re not about to pull another one over on me.”

“It was my dad. Are you happy? I left because they had my dad.”

His face did a one-eighty, disappointment turned into disbelief.

“They were going to put him away for good unless I came back and fixed everything - unless I left you and went back to them.”

By now the tears that were being held back were free falling. Both of them were looking at each other trying to find an inkling of anything to read the situation.

She used the back of her sleeve to wipe away the tears that trickled down her cheek. The incident was a thing of the past, that was all over and now it was out in the open.

“What do we do now?”

“We make it work - I am Captain Awesome, after all.”

“That is true.”

“And now I have you.”

“That’s true, too.”
