1. I read To Kill A Mockingbird yesterday and I thought it was perfect. Kind of heartbreaking (The trial, Boo Radley, "Miss Jean Louise, stand up. ( Read more... )

Awesome! :D

Yeaaaah, I'm not going to lie, I did think of you when Jem turned out to be a nickname for Jeremy. (Pfff, can't wait to see how Jem is in the movie, the few pictures Google Images turned up are already adorable.)

Oh, cool! (I don't know any other Jeremys, so I didn't know how common or uncommen that was as a nickname.)

Yay for Internet!
To Kill a Mockingbird is such a great book, I'm glad you enjoyed it !:) I really loved Neverwhere when I read it (probably 10 years ago, haha), but you just made me want to read the Mieville book because...well, <3Mieville.

Eek, rooms without heating! At least it's not your bedroom?

I did quite like Neverwhere (I read it I think 3 years ago) but I didn't think it was anything special, maybe because I read it after his better books, American Gods and Anansi Boys (Also, the fact that Gaiman kept using the word elfin irrationally bothered me, LOL). It's certainly not the book I'd rec to people who've never read Gaiman before.

<3 Mieville indeed! The fact that the characters were often quirky in a funny way really endeared them to me (I don't think I ever laughed about things in Mieville's adult books). Not just Deeba but also Hemi the half ghost, Obaday the Pinhead, the book (a character, yes) and many others. The antagonist is Smog (y'know... actual smog). It's great fun!

No, just the ground floor. All the bedrooms are on the first floor, luckily. It's just that our house is brand new and the concrete around the floor heating needs to harden.

To Kill a Mockingbird is wonderful! It gets read a lot in American high schools -- or, at least, it did in mine and a lot of my friends' -- and I think it's a book that stands up to analysis pretty well. Anyway, yes, it's awesome!

I keep debating whether I should read some Chine Mieville. I've heard both things that made me intrigued and things that made me think I wouldn't like his stuff. Your post makes me think I should maybe start with Un Lun Dun... (because I liked Neverwhere, but didn't think it was the awesomest thing ever, or even the awesomest thing by Gaiman...)

Congrats on getting your internet and cable back!

I think that Un Lun Dun and the Bas-Lag books differ a lot because:
1. Un Lun Dun doesn't end with all the characters having a super depressing ending.
2. Un Lun Dun has a lot of humour.
3. Mieville toned it down on complicated word use (obviously). And Un Lun Dun is a lot shorter.

I don't think this makes the Bas-Lag books worse (because the endings are quite amazing, the stories are wonderfully intricate and imaginative even without humour and I discovered really cool new words). I do think that the characters are better when it comes to being lovable. Mieville's characters are interesting but sometimes flat but I always thought the really wacky things that happen plotwise and the worldbuilding made up for it.

Semi-related: I'm hoping for the moment where his love for New Weird books meets his interest for the Middle East and Arab culture. THAT WOULD BE SO OUT THERE.

I agree on winter. It wasn't so far back in time that winter was associated with highly increased death rates, but people claim to love it? Wtf-ever.

I really hope your heating situation gets fixed soon!

And yeah, To Kill a Mockingbird is pretty much required American Lit all over the U.S. I remember we had to read it in middle school, and we got to see the movie after reading. Fun times :)
