Two young girls rushed down the concourse
Running left, then right without purpose.
Stopping now to collect rocks,
Stopping here to pull stickers of their locks.
They took no notice of the critters’ fright
Seen in their swift flight.
When sudden sound broke out,
The girls looked down the route,
Trying to find the thing that uttered the sound
Their eyes feel on one lonely mound.
Upon this mound stood some thing
That possessed such huge wings.
The girls looked on with surprise
Unsure whether to believe their eyes.
They remembered the story
But never thought they would see the phoenix in its glory.
The youngest girl moved to it
Though the phoenix would not permit
This bold urge
So with one surge
The phoenix took to the sky;
The youngest girl shouted goodbye.
She looked to the dome that belonged to their home
Knowing no one would believe;
Or conceive;
The notion that they looked upon
The phoenix, which she turned to look on
Till it could be seen no more.
Then she looked for other things of lore
Hoping they could be found
Down by the mound.
