Title: Snow Clouds

Summary: Harry and Luna watch snow clouds form
Author's Notes: gift for my Secret Puff daughterjudy over at the Puff Common Room @ hogwartsishome; based off a scene in Sandry's Book by Tamora Pierce :)
Harry had retreated to the lake to escape the unresolved sexual tension between Hermione and Ron. It was just too much to take, especially considering his own feelings. That, plus the other couples that had stayed behind for the holiday using the mistletoe spread out through the castle as a good excuse to make out everywhere rubbed the fact that he was uncommitted in his face.
So there he was, staring at the still lake, hoping the giant squid would pop up and make things interesting on this dull day.
“Hello, Harry,” a voice said dreamily from behind him, causing him to jump.
He turned around and saw Luna Lovegood standing there. “Oh, hello, Luna.”
“Are you out here because you like cloud watching too? I find watching clouds in the winter is best because sometimes you can tell if it will be a snow cloud or not. Plus the shapes are very interesting. Maybe if the clouds agree, I can finally show you what a Crumple-Horned Snorkack looks like.” Luna smiled at him, and Harry couldn't help the awkwardness that washed over him.
“Oh….that’s nice…”
“Yes. I will try my best to find one for you.”
Then... an awkward pause of some minutes.
“Can you really tell if it’s going to snow by looking at a cloud?” Harry asked suddenly, trying to break the wall of silence.
“Oh yes, it’s quite simple. Here ,I’ll show you.” Luna sat down beside Harry and then laid down on her back. Harry looked around a little before following her example.
“Well, it seems that it might take a while. That one right there might be a good one, but we’ll have to see in a bit. On a nice day like this it takes a few tries 'til you find one that’ll work. Oh look, that cloud looks like a rabbit. Don’t you agree, Harry?”
Harry tried to picked out the cloud that Luna was pointing at but there were a couple in the same area. So his response was a lame “Uh…yeah.”
“Looked, that’s a dragon. And that one is a cat, he looks an awful lot like Crookshanks, don’t you think, Harry?”
Once again, Harry uttered the lame response.
Luna continued to list off a variety of animals, leaving Harry wondering how she saw these things. Then after a while he wondered if there was something wrong with him, like maybe he didn’t have enough imaginationto be able to see these shapes.
“So, Harry, what do you see?”
Harry had been zoning out just listening to Luna talk and was startled by this address. “W-what do I see?” Harry mentally cursed. He’d been trying to see what Luna was talking about for the past ten to fifteen minutes with no success. He scanned the clouds for any sort of familiar shape. “Well…that one, there, that sort looks like a Snitch, don’t you think?”
“Hmm…I think you may be right, Harry. Oh look! That cloud is going to be a snow cloud! The one I pointed out earlier, remember.”
“Oh yeah, I remember. So, how can you tell that it’s going to snow?”
“Well, if you look at it you can see it slowly start to get bigger and change colors. But you need to look hard and long enough to be able to tell.”
“Oh…okay.”
“Yeah, just watch it for a while.”
Harry stared at the cloud; half hoping to see what Luna was talking about. He stared and stared and was on the verge of giving up when he noticed the cloud was getting dark. It had started as a light grey and was now approaching a more charcoal grey.
“Hey, I see what you’re talking about.”
“That’s awesome, Harry.”
“Yeah….Thanks, Luna,” Harry said looking over at Luna and smiling.
“Whatever for,” Luna asked, confused.
“For teaching me that trick.”
“Oh, it's no problem, Harry.”
The two watched the clouds turn into snow clouds until Ron and Hermione came out looking for Harry as dinner was almost over. Harry and Luna got up and followed the two Gryffindors inside. As they crossed the threshold into the castle it started to snow.
