I didn't join any clubs / circles either for much the same reason...the clubs were all sports things or weird stuff like "plane flying club".

Could you advertise that you are looking for a conversation partner? Through a prof or something?

I know ladyomnipotent had a bad experience with that, but other people have had good ones.

But on the contrary, David had a great experience with his speaking partner, and I did too because we would all hang out together. I say go for it if the oppurtunity is available!
