Weird kids' TV of my childhood

Found a nice new blog, Wyrd Britain, which is full of supernatural stuff and folk horror - specifically I was interested in the latest post, about The Witches and the Grinnygog. I'd thought I knew all of that sort of children's TV series made in Britain in the 80s, but apparently not. Watched it on YouTube and I don't think this one will be getting ( Read more... )

I've heard of that series but I'm pretty sure I didn't see it. Perhaps it was on at a time of day when I wasn't home (I didn't have a VCR). The 80s were good for children's TV.

I remember being riveted by Moondial and Tom's Midnight Garden, and then they started doing The Chronicles of Narnia - all that within a couple of years!

The Leon Garfield adaptations were excellent, especially Mr Corbett's Ghost.

And thanks for the link to Wyrd Britain. It looks fantastic. I didn't know about the Kim Newman so that goes near the top of my reading list.

I've been going through that other post looking for stuff mentioned - the Astercote (nice book) adaptation and most of the Leon Garfieds seem to have fallen into the "never released on VHS or DVD" pit, so I could only find The Ghost in the Water on YouTube. We gave up on it because R in particular found it too slow, but I liked the atmosphere and will return to it on my own.

Here in the UK we had The Tomorrow People on ITV and The Box of Delight on BBC

I'm also in the UK! I was too young for The Box of Delights but Mum picked it up on video when I was 11 - still a yearly Christmas tradition!
