"so hold on, hold on for your life"

Quiet week post-wise because country slipping (hurtling joyfully, truth be told) into fascism. Always awkward when that happens. Shitposting on my new Tumblr created for the purpose of alternately venting and cheering myself up will continue until morale improves. And we made major headway with the application this week, which has kept us sane ( Read more... )

That might be the most terrifying headline I've read lately, and I've been primarily reading headlines about Trump. Time to think about moving out to sea?

I added your new tumblr - I hope you don't mind, but I can always use more shitposting in my life.

Yeah, not much to choose between our countries for scary headlines lately. :|

I definitely don't mind! Added both your blogs too. :) Everything gets liked or replied to through the admin account (tealightcandles1794) because heartisamusclethesizeofyourfist is just a sideblog, but it can still reblog stuff. I'm hoping that'll stop me falling all the way into Tumblr!

Got it! That seems like a reasonable way to try to limit tumblr involvement.

Watched the debate earlier and I'm hoping he's on the way down, but yeah... I'm wary of getting over-confident about that.

This is probably too definitive a statement, but I think the single key to success, at least among the fandoms I've participated in, has been gif making. Having quality copies of sought after material, a good program, and an eye for color and composition. As far as I can see, it's the reason some of the silly girls in the SS fandom have risen into their current BNF circle-jerk.

I really do respect good gif making and know the work that goes into it, but at the same time, I mention this "key to success" to you with a bit of contempt since it means when majority of people come to tumblr they're really just turning their brains off and looking for pretty pictures... They can be roped into interesting text posts, and sometimes they're curious enough to play audios and videos, but for the most part if a picture isn't already moving for them and can't play itself in a matter of seconds, it's too much work.

In short: consistently post pretty moving pictures and they will come.

It wouldn't surprise me if gifs were a strong factor in Tumblr success - the right gif at the right moment is absolutely priceless. I've never got into gif making (apart from when I used to do tiny animated pixel art and blinkies when I was young and pre web 2.0); it never managed to breach my increasingly low can't-be-arsed threshold, but I do know there's a lot of politics around gifsets on Tumblr - people saving and reposting them is apparently a big problem (the makers would rather you reblogged from them; it seems to be the 'not tagging icons with the maker's name' of Tumblr ( ... )
