Another Step

The case lay open before him, clothes scattered all over the bed. It was the first time the place had looked a mess since the other lads had moved out. In wake of Lloyd’s departure he’d become neat and tidy Joe. Well, he’d tried at least. He couldn’t believe this was it though, this was almost the end of the X Factor dream and now the big wide world waited for him, exciting yet terrifying at the same time.

‘Hey… need a hand?’

Joe smiled as he heard the soft question come from the doorway and turned to find Lloyd stood there, hands shoved deep into his pockets and looking antsy.

‘Sure,’ he answered finally, beginning to shove shirts into his case.

Lloyd settled down beside him on his knees on the floor and exhaled loudly, causing Joe to look at him suddenly. ‘Sorry,’ the younger teen murmured, an anxious laugh escaping him. ‘I had to beg to get them to bring me here, wanted to congratulate you properly, you know…’

A slow and understanding smile spread over Joe’s face and he shifted to lay a hand to Lloyd’s knee. ‘Thank you,’ he said softly. ‘That means a lot.’ And it did. His friend could have quite easily gone out of his way to avoid him after what had happened between them a fortnight ago, but he didn’t, he actively searched him out.

‘Thing is…’ Another deep breath. ‘I can’t stop thinking about you,’ Lloyd admitted, idly toying with one of the t-shirts Joe had left on the bed. ‘Ever since… well, you know.’ He laughed, a nervous and shaky chuckle that told Joe he still hadn’t managed to get his head around the new revelation.

‘And…?’ he couldn’t help but push; sadly they didn’t have all night.

A shrug, carefree, and then Joe found Lloyd’s lips on his own. The kiss was desperate, messy and anything but perfect, but it was nice all the same. He found himself smiling into it after only a moment and reached his hands up to hold Lloyd’s face.

The kiss came to a natural end shortly afterwards as he slid a hand down to caress Lloyd’s neck and his friend sighed, head dropping onto Joe’s shoulder.

‘I think that you’re really good at that,’ he chuckled as his gaze drifted to the ceiling. ‘Makes me wonder what else you’re good at.’

Lloyd mumbled something incoherent and tugged lightly on Joe’s shirt, his inquisitive lips drifting elsewhere.

They found their destination a moment later and a soft groan tumbled from Joe’s lips as Lloyd kissed and suckled at his pulse point. This didn’t feel real, as if tonight hadn’t been surreal enough, this only made him question it more. He had to be dreaming, this many good things did not happen to one person in a single night.

Joe was forced to pull away when Lloyd began to fumble with the buttons of his shirt, inexperienced fingers desperate to try something new. He didn’t want Lloyd to rush into anything he wasn’t ready to do and, truth be told, they didn’t have time now. Any minute one of their minders would be up to check on them and anything they might do would be ruined - in several different ways and quite abruptly, too.

For several moments he just sat and stared, fighting to catch his breath as his heart rate slowed. He could have lost himself quite easily if given half a chance, minders be damned.

‘When can I see you… properly?’ Lloyd’s question broke the silence, only to create more.

Joe sighed and closed his eyes as he thought about it. He honestly didn’t know and that was the problem. He wanted to say tomorrow, the next day, every day of his life, because he’d missed not having Lloyd around to what would be considered unhealthy levels.

Instead though, he shrugged his shoulders and said, ‘I’ll have to ring you and let you know, I suppose...’

Lloyd visibly deflated, his bright blue eyes losing their sparkle as his gaze dropped down to his hands. ‘OK,’ he started, ‘I guess that makes sense.’ He said the words, but Joe was convinced he didn’t mean them one tiny bit.

Ignoring the sound of approaching footsteps, Joe grabbed for his hand and pulled him up and into the bathroom. The door slammed shut beneath Lloyd’s weight as Joe pushed him against it and kissed him deeply. A soft moan bubbled up in his throat after only moments, the carefree caress of Lloyd’s tongue doing things to him he was pretty sure it shouldn’t have. But this, he enjoyed too much.

Somewhere in-between all the frenzied kissing and messed up thoughts, Joe heard him murmur, ‘I want you so much…’

This had already gone further than it should have, there’d be no point in going back now. So he sighed and began to tug on Lloyd’s shirt, lifting it across his stomach and letting his fingers follow the path it took. The feeling was undoubtedly mutual and as Lloyd’s tentative fingers moved through his hair, he felt his body hum with excitement of what was to come. Joe could quite happily take everything right now if he felt compelled to do so.

‘Hey, lads…?’ The voice out in their old room brought them both back down to earth with a sudden crash.

Lloyd pulled away first; eyes darting around frantically and breathing hard. His head hit the back of the door with a loud bang and for a minute or so, they simply stared at each other.

‘Sophie said you were in here.’ Olly was still in the bedroom, apparently unconvinced that they were not there. And sure enough, a second later there was a sharp rap against the other side of the door.

Lloyd jumped, but didn’t get too far and instead crashed straight into Joe who quickly shushed him with a finger pressed to his lips. Neither of them moved another inch and eventually the door closed again outside, Lloyd’s shoulders slumping in relief almost immediately.

‘I’ll call you and we can pick this up another time… or something,’ supplied Joe softly, offering his friend an encouraging smile.

With a nod, Lloyd slipped from his hold and murmured, ‘Don’t leave it too long, hey?’ He was smiling, infectiously, his eyes twinkling in the darkness and Joe felt his stomach flip beneath his stare. He suspected that it wouldn’t stop for a long time to come.

Lloyd was the first to leave the bathroom and in turn, he headed out of the bedroom too, leaving Joe alone to finish packing.

It didn’t take him long; he’d been getting things together on and off all week. So he threw what was left into the case, slammed it shut and made his way out of the room, finally saying goodbye to all the craziness with a bang of the door.
