Since elementary school and public education seem to be a theme in everyone's LJs lately, I thought I'd add my two cents ( Read more... )

I had bad handwriting too, but I don't remember ever getting in trouble for it luckily.

One Sunday School I went to (when Mom was trying out new churches), they made us sit and watch religious cartoons, and whoever was the quietest would get a huge candy bar. We only went one Sunday but I got the candy bar. :)

omg, did you watch those anime-style ones, Superbook and Flying House? My mom used to send my sister and I to all the local vacation bible schools, it was like a hokey free day camp!

You know, I can't remember what they were called. I thought they were just bible stories, but it's been so long I can't recall.

We did vacation bible school too, heh - and Awana for a little while. Did you ever do that? We had brown shirts like cub scouts and you'd get little patches and things for memorizing bible verses. I was in elementary school when I did it, and I got teased because I didn't accept Jesus into my heart as early as the other kids (I did when I was 8). I remember them saying things like "well, I accepted Jesus into my heart when I was 2!"

I went to a new age church growing up, so the whole accepting Jesus into your heart (and communion, for that matter) were foreign to me and for some reason never mentioned in VBS (or if they were, I just figured it meant more like, "Jesus seems like a nice guy, I can accept that, sure."). I've never heard of Awana, but at some of the VBSs, I got candy or "tokens" (redeemable later) for memorizing verses. The best part was that most of the VBSs seemed to be based on the same stuff, so after one week of VBS at one church, I had all the versus memorized and got candy/tokens a lot faster at a different church's VBS.

I only remember 2 VBS themes, but I still remember the theme songs because my little sister and I thought they were hilarious. "Psalty's Worship Workshop" and "Son-Seeker Safari," the latter was my favourite.

I tried to start a satan fan club in church when I was a little kid -- I always liked bad guys (like the Purple Pie Man) and thought he just had a bad rap. I didn't get into trouble, but they did mention it to my

My sister got in trouble for her handwriting style- she held the pencil like my Mom does (who has gorgeous handwriting). My Mom thought the teacher was being an idiot for trying to break Natalie into holding the pencil in her way. And in the long run, she was, as now my sister's handwriting is *terrible*. I mean, so much time was spent BICKERING over how to hold a pencil, it was so stupid!

And you should have seen a young Travis at VBS. Oh man. Arguing religious doctrine at 5 years old. And making valid points. This is why I don't connect with Jesus. Travis pointed out to me if some strange man came up to me and did Jesus-y things, I would probably think he was a Stranger, and Strangers are Bad, if you know what I mean!

I liked VBS because I got candy (which we didn't really get at home, except on Halloween and holidays) and other rewards -- I got a straw fedora when I was going through my Indiana Jones phase -- and fun crafts. And then Chani and I would make fun of all of it on the ride home.
