He
He’s far from perfect. So far from it, that when he comes to mind, the word isn’t even remotely associated. People often don’t know who he really is. They all have ideas of his true identity, but most are so off the mark that she has a hard time not laughing when they start describing him to her. The guys idolize him and the girls utterly adore him. But they never realize that when he’s confidently flirting with women half his age, he’s doing it from the comfort of the stage. He doesn’t have to see them again, not really anyways, and he doesn’t actually have to speak directly to them. In a real life situation, the most he’d be able to do would be politely smile and exchange mild conversation before praying to every deity that came to mind they’d leave. And while he says all these cool lines on stage, they forget that he’s not having to look anyone in the eye in particular when saying it. If he tries anything like that out with her, he usually can’t finish before falling into a fit of giggles and snickers at his unabashed genius. He’s not really as suave or as much of a lady killer as they expect. They don’t realize that when he starts telling his stories that gets everyone laughing so hard they start crying, it’s because he’s taking the focus off himself and onto his words.

They often also don’t realize that he’s not always quite that funny. His pranks and playfulness can get annoying and when she does finally snap at him to knock it off, she doesn’t feel an ounce of pity for him when he starts to sulk or withdraws a little. She knows if she apologizes for snapping, he’ll just go right back to it. And she also knows that if she doesn’t apologize, he won’t stay that way. He realizes she does a lot in a day running a household, raising a child, and having a career all at once and he knows he gets off fairly easy with a lot of things when he is home as it is simply because she began to miss his presence so. They both know there are so many more important things to really fight about anyhow. And they do fight about them just like any other couple. There are nights he begrudgedly will take to the couch. There are other nights where he goes out drinking with friends, staying out as late as possible in hopes she’ll be asleep and unable to kick him out. There are weeks that go by where they hardly say more than a few words to each other they’re both so mad at the other.

Most people also don’t realize that living with him isn’t exactly living the dream even when they aren’t bickering. He’s often forgetful and will leave things half-done because something else caught his attention. When he’s around home and goes out, he’s almost always coming back three or four times or making phone calls asking her where he left something. Years ago, she used to try to prompt him to remember on his own, but she soon came to realize that was never going to come to fruition. She’s better at retracing his steps than he is himself. The house is almost always a mess-a problem of having a child-but when you have him around, it’s like having ten kids in terms of the mess. Until he distracts her from it (and that’s certainly not something she will ever mind), she’s rarely not having to clean something in the house. And he knows this. He makes it up to her in little ways every now and again whether it’s her favorite flower or simply a few, quick kisses while their son is distracted by a toy or the television for the moment. Sometimes he even gets bold enough to try and figure out how to work the vacuum cleaner. This is a sight funnier to her than any story he ever cares to share and she’s glad he’s got just a little, small sense of pride to avoid admitting he still doesn’t know how to operate it even after almost six years of it being in the house.

But even with all his imperfections, his annoying habits, their sometimes long stand-off fights, or all the extra work he brings about when he’s home, she doesn’t mind it. She doesn’t love him any less and if anything, she loves him more. They can love him as the person they imagine him to be like. But only she can love him for the man he truly is.
