I want to thank sarahshevett for letting me know about a show that is on PBS about cows, and more specifically showing cows at the Fryeburg Fair. As you might deduce from my user icons I adore cows, especially Guernseys. I grew up in New Hampshire on a small farm where my family “played” farmer for a number of years, raising Guernsey dairy cows as well as ( Read more... )

Nice. Nothing like a litlte farmer blunt truth to make you smile.

Yeah for cows! My grandfather raised beefalo and I have fond memories of the farm. Dairy farms are truly vile places, though.

Rather be happy than proud. sarahshevett May 15 2006, 21:09:10 UTC
Pride goeth before a fall.
With the price of milk right now, who could be proud of that? (as goat milk price rises and rises, No government involvement in pricing either)

And around here, Jerseys are the tops. Holsteins are so yesterday.

I'm really glad you got to see that show. I loved it too. I loved the way the farmers talked about cows, and farming. It's all true, and it's the way I feel too. It's like listening to someone from my planet.

I have been out the dairy "planet" for a very long time, but "back in the day" Holsteins were big. I have always had a disdain for Holsteins because they are standard-bearers for quantity over quality. Jerseys certainly produce a quality milk - even higher butterfat than my beloved Guernseys - but they are just plain ugly cows. I know that is really shallow, but I can't help myself!
