I am sure that I am not unique in having songs that, when played, remind me of a very specific moment in my life. I have many such songs that remind me of memories so vividly that I can literally smell the surroundings of the memory. I have a whole series of songs from my childhood that used to play on the radio in our barn that make me smell ( Read more... )

Wow that's pretty creepy. Now I"LL think of that when I hear the song.
Kinda like the screaming in the background in "Rollercoaster Of Love"

I was having a crazy summer in 1976, as an 18 year old. The 70's were nuts.

Sorry, didn't mean to ruin the song for you too..

The 70's were crazy fun for me too, but probably in a much different way than they were for you - seeing as I was only 8 :)

Well I spent most of that summer working in a Baskin Robbins on the corner of 1st ave and 14th st in Manhattan. This was the "Summer of Sam" Berkowitz (Son of Sam killer) and living with my Aunt on C st . In the 70's NYC was quite an interesting place to be ( I liked it better then than now.)

Also, the bicentennial and all that came with it in NYC.

And, yeah, being 18, and no holds barred.

Omg! I'm so sorry Sweatheart, what an intensly horrible memory...

Though I must say you wrote the above so well! It reads like a chapter from a book (the book of your life perhaps?) As I read it I saw it like a movie in my head (complete with a soundtrack) and that's the mark of something very well written. I have similar terrifying childhood memories that I replay in my mind when faced with certain triggers like music, sights or smells. The human brain is an odd piece of machinery...

Thanks.

I was just sitting here at work and that song came over the radio. It had been a long time since I heard it and when it came on the radio in my office I thought of that poor little girl and how I should write it down before I forgot about it again.

You are absolutely right, the brain is a pretty complex thing.

I had not planned on writing that entry and then that song came over the radio while I was sitting at work and I decided to share the memory. Next time I will have to write about a happy memory that a song inspires.

Wow... what a horrible experience for an 8 year old to live through! But a valuable lesson for all parents ... even if there is a lifeguard, keep an eye on your own kids. I never let mine out of my sight in the water, for exactly the reason you wrote about. Nowadays, lifeguards (still teenagers) patrol with their cellphones attached to their ear, how much attention can they really be paying?

LJ is weird...I just got the e-mail that you responded to this post....

Anyway, my wife and I are very careful around water with our girls. We have told the girls that they can choose to participate in whatever sports, etc. that they want but swimming lessons are mandatory.....especially since we live near the water and both of their grandparents have homes right on the water.
