"Come with me," are the words that have been haunting him for the past three weeks - Rin's words. As if the time Rin had asked him and Makoto what their plans are after graduation isn't enough to leave him with a pool-load of uncertainty. Now Rin's impulsive invitation has left Haru discombobulated.
The uncertainty about the future has been following Haru around like an ominous cloud above his head. He didn't worry about it before, didn't give it much thought, just taking things as they come and accepts whatever fate throws at him.
Surprisingly though, neither he nor Makoto have brought it up and they've always plan things, do things together like they've always had since they were little. Best friends. Joined at the hip. But then there's Rin.
Rin, who has his dreams set in stone it seems, has always been sure of what he wants. Haru, on the other hand, just takes things one step at a time though he has been contemplating about the future ever since Rin brought it up.
"Can we hang out at your place, Haru-chan?" Nagisa asks just as they are walking out of the school grounds.
"Maybe not today, Nagisa." Makoto responds in his stead, perhaps sensing that Haru needs his space.
Makoto doesn't ask what's wrong, what's bothering Haru, just walks in silent company until they reach their abode, saying, "See you tomorrow, Haru."
Haru isn't too shocked to see Sousuke waiting by his front door but is a little wary to invite him in, just asks, "What do you want, Yamazaki?" knowing somehow that the guy is there because of Rin.
"Has he told you about the letter?" is all Sousuke says and Haru presumes he means the letter Rin has received from a prestigious University in Australia, offering him full scholarship and a chance to train with an internationally-renowned swimming trainer.
"What's it to you?" Haru snaps, fed up with the way Sousuke always gets in his case wherever Rin is concerned.
"Bet he's asked you to go with him. Wouldn't be too surprised if he chooses to stay here in this bumfuck town if you don't." The gaze Sousuke casts upon him is too condescending for Haru's patience.
"Whatever Rin decides is none of my business. Now if you'd excuse me, I have things to do." Haru makes sure he slams the door behind him after stepping inside his house.
The next day, Nagisa asks again. "Haru-chan, can we hang out at your place?"
And again, Makoto is the one who answers, "Maybe not today," but his eyes are fixed ahead and when Haru follows his gaze, he spots Rin waiting by the school gate.
A flurry of excuses sprout from Makoto, Nagisa and Rei's mouths before they all disappear, leaving Haru alone with Rin, who says, "Hey," and wedges his lower lip between his teeth then asks, "Have you made up your mind?"
"I," is all Haru's able to say, feeling the cloud above his head growing darker.
