It almost didn't come as a surprise when Yuto confessed to him.
He had kind of expected it.
Ryosuke was usually too thickheaded to get the hints, it wasn't until last week when Ryutarou pointed out how weird the taller boy had been acting that he had taken notice. From the unexpected strawberry cakes to late night text messages... He knew Yuto long enough to see that he was a nice person, but this was a bit too overboard for a normal friend.
However, expected was one thing, knowing how to react was another.
Standing two meters away from each other right now, his mind drew a complete blank.
So he could only stare at Yuto, made all kind of weird expressions, then he panicked and ran away.

"Do I really have to be in the middle?" He asked, hands already sweating when he looked at the handles attached on the two cables in the middle. He hated heights either way, but if he was with the other eight, at least it looked safer with the cable attached on their backs. It was their first ever public performance. He couldn't dare to think what would happen if he lost his grip and fall.
Yuto chuckled and adjusted the mic on the side of his face for him. "If Yama-chan is scared up there then just look at me. We only have to let go of each other for a few seconds, I won't let Yama-chan fall." He spoke in a volume only Ryosuke can hear, but the sincere look in his eyes made Ryosuke nod in complete trust.
He wasn't lying when he said that he had always admired Yuto's kindness. Although he didn't do anything really extraordinary, it was the little details that he was always attentive about which Ryosuke would be grateful for.

During the course of recording the food segment, he had left his spot on the red couch and sat down beside him. He laughed and leaned on him when the guest said something funny. Ryosuke grew a little stiff at their short distance.
It was weird.
It had been weird ever since Yuto said that he loved him.
He didn't give any reply that day, but the next day Yuto had spoken to him normally like any other time. So he didn't ask.
But he had been painfully aware of the other's touch ever since that day.
He didn't know why it became harder to breathe every time he was near.

He was jostled awake by a loud thump.
It took him ten seconds to recover from the unfamiliar ceiling to remember that he was in Hawaii. Turning on the bed side lights, Ryosuke found Nakajima-kun on the floor between the two beds for the second time that night.
Such bad sleeping posture and he didn't even wake up after the fall.
He tossed his blanket to the side and slipped out of his bed. A cool breeze drifted through the window and brushed over Nakajima-kun's bangs. Ryosuke giggled and poked the other in the cheek causing him to turn his head to the side. Only in his sleep would his dai-senpai* finally look like the kid who was three months younger than him.
He lifted the other up with a bit of difficulty and dragged him back to bed. With an afterthought, he neatly placed the blanket over him.
"Oyasumi nasai** ...Yuto."

It's childish, he told himself, so stop it.
Logic told him that at this age he shouldn't be jealous over the fact that his best friend got closer with someone else. But every time he caught Yuto talking excitedly to Keito about drums or guitars he would feel irritated. He would refuse every time he was invited to their outings.
He understand fully that Keito was a gentle person. He was kind and nice to everyone, but Ryosuke couldn't help feeling hostile. It was like the feeling of his favourite toy being stolen, only in this case it would be his best friend.
He knew Yuto liked Keito a lot as well. It was because Keito paid attention to him and actually took care of him. Because with Keito he was receiving affections and with Ryosuke he was always giving affections.
But if he's so tired of giving then why doesn't he just confess to Keito already and be a couple?! I didn't force him to like me and he's just my best friend! Ryosuke heard himself getting unreasonable.
So in the next magazine interview, he said without hesitation, my best friend is Arioka Daiki.

"Oishii***!"
"Really?"
"It's really delicious Yama-chan!"
He blushed at the compliments from the over-reacting duo in front of him. He had completely ignored his instructor's recipe and made his own version of dishes in home economics class, and now they were all pigging out.
For once, he quietly watched Yuto and Chinen eat letting them do all the talking. A part of him felt at peace, it was like he can't imagine how else high school could be like without these two in the same class.
Ryosuke admit it, when Yuto first announced that he also got into Horikoshi, he was at a loss of what to do.
They'll be in the same class, in the same school and even boarding on the same train home as before. And he didn't know how to face him. At work they would always have something to do and he could still somehow dodge away somewhere if things had gotten uncomfortable, but in school it was more difficult. Especially if Chinen is in the same class and he didn't know their conditions.
But somehow everything turned out okay.
Yuto hadn't made anything awkward for him.
And on the days where he felt like he needed to stay away, it was the other who would excuse himself with his student rep duties or run to his karate club after school. Ryosuke knew full well that he was being pampered.
It was these days when he could think of the other and unconsciously smile.

He was cruel, he knew that. He didn't want to let go of Yuto's kindness, so he never managed to make a proper rejection.
He was scared. Scared of change, and scared of his stable walls collapsing.
Scared of losing those smiling eyes.
Scared of losing the arm that hung around his shoulders.
Scared of losing the adoring gaze.
Scared of losing that gentle smile.
He was scared of losing Nakajima Yuto.

When last part of Seishun Amigo finished, they both slipped down to the floor exhausted and tried to catch their breath. It had been quite a while since they've performed this song together again, and Ryosuke was happy when Yuto suggested to add it as a part of their concert song list.
The studio was stuffy even though the windows were open. It was already very late at night, so there were only the two of them there. Ryosuke knew the reason why Yuto had dragged him out for rehearsal today, and he had complied because he decided to spoil him a little. He even had the present ready in his backpack.
They were both silent as both hands on the clock finally landed on twelve.
It was August 10th, 2009.
He looked over at Yuto with a smile on his face, only to find the other is already looking at him.
"Time's up Yama-chan."
Ryosuke stared puzzled at the other's words, 'Happy Birthday Yuto' stuck in his throat. There was a period of long silence.
He turned from his sitting position so that he regarded the other fully. "...What?"
"I've given you three years to realize your feelings," Yuto smiled and conveniently caught both of his hands, "and time's up."
Ryosuke froze as the taller boy lean over him, like a deer caught in headlights. All alarms in his body went off at their proximity, but he was immobile because he was sitting and his hands were caught. He couldn't help feeling panicked and trapped as the distance slowly close between them. He escaped from the other's gaze by turning his focus on that alluring mole under his left eye.
He knew.
He knew. He knew. He KNEW.
His eyes widen like saucers and something clicked like that last piece of a puzzle.
He knew I loved him before I even realized it.
"Yamada Ryosuke, it's about time you hand yourself over to me." Lips murmured before softly descending on his.
It was then Ryosuke felt his stable walls collapse.
He fell into everything that was Nakajima Yuto.
