That was great - but what is/are "vege crispers"? I don't understand. Is it something you clean or do you eat it? Clearly we are a long way from Sheffield here. I love how, when you read a post by an Antipodean, you understand most of it but there are always a good handful of terms where you have no idea what they are (well if you're British anyway.)

Vege crispers are those drawers at the bottom of the fridge, where you store fresh fruit and vegetables. I keep fruit in the left one, vegies in the right.

Yes, the shared cultural heritage of empire does seem to mean that we understand one another's colloquialisms much better than we do, say, Americans. I'm reminded of Adrian Mole having to translate his letters for the American, Hamish Mancini.

For instance, I could read Irvine Welsh's 'Acid House', or Viz comics, and understand *most* of what was being said (even Sid the Sexist's impenetrable jargon). For the rest, I used to work with a chap from Leeds who filled in the rest.

One of the things I admired about the Harry Potter books was that Rowling almost defiantly kept using British words like trainers, scarpered, pudding (as a generic word for 'dessert'), instead of Americanisms.

Ah thanks. Is that because they keep the vegetables crisp then? It's a better word than just "draw" or "shelf" anyhow
