[character history / background]:

|| Background ||

Upon being born, Allen was abandoned by his parents (most likely) because of his mutilated left arm, which was blood red and veiny, with a cross embedded into the back of the hand (later, he learned that his hand was as is due to it being Innocence), leaving him with no real memories whatsoever of his parents and no knowledge of his real birth date or age growing up. As a child he worked in the circus doing odd jobs. At the age of about seven, Allen was adopted by a traveling circus clown, Mana Walker, on Christmas day. From then on, Allen also began working as a traveling clown with Mana, gaining incredible skills in acrobatics, juggling and flexibility.

:: Note: It's been officially stated that Allen's left arm/hand was immobile until his Innocence was first invoked (explained next), but the storyline seems to ignore this: during flashbacks of Allen's childhood in the circus, he can clearly move his left arm, and towards the beginning of the series, Allen states, and proves, that he learned several skills in the circus. This includes juggling --something you would need both hands to do successfully. With that said, for the sake of the storyline, I'll pay little attention to the immobile arm fact until it appears more solidly in the storyline. ::

When Allen was around ten years old, Mana passed away on Christmas day, exactly three years after adopting Allen. Completely shattered by the death of the one person to accept him, Allen entered a contract with the Millennium Earl (a villain who scams people who have lost loved ones by offering to resurrect the dead, but instead makes 'akuma' of them) hoping to bring his father back to life. Instead, Mana was turned into an akuma, and began to curse Allen for listening to the Earl. Before Mana could take Allen's body to complete the making of the akuma, Allen's left arm reacted and transformed into an anti-akuma weapon (Which he later learns is known as 'Innocence'.) in the shape of a huge claw, destroying Mana and saving himself. The event left Allen with a strange scar across the left side of his face and a curse giving him the ability to see the souls of akuma. It is unknown whether it is the cause of 'Mana's curse' or the trauma of killing his father, but at that point, Allen's hair changed colors from brown to white.

Immediately after killing his father, Allen met General Cross Marian of the Black Order. He traveled the world with Cross, rehabilitating his left arm (providing it really was immobile before), learning about akuma, and training to become an exorcist, or soldiers of the Church who destroy akuma and retrieve missing Innocence. During his time with Cross, he had been left to pay for Cross's endless debt, forcing him to become adept in skills such as cheating in cards to earn money (it is sometimes assumed that Allen never loses a game of cards). When he was about fifteen, Cross told Allen that he was ready to join the Order as an exorcist, and abandoned him in India, leaving Allen to travel to England to join the Order alone. Cross is known to be a huge trauma case for Allen. In fact, besides his acquired gambling skills, he also credits having good eyesight in the dark due to his "thrifty lifestyle during my training."

| From the Intro Arc to the Timothy Arc |

:: Note on the Ghost of Mater Arc: In the manga, meeting John took place in the Intro Arc before Allen reached the Order. Because he hadn't made it to the Order just yet., Toma and Lenalee were not there and had no role whatsoever in the small story. After getting the Innocence from Lala, Allen and Toma bring it straight to the Order. ::

:: Note on the Rewinding Town Arc: Which the anime adaptation provides the date October 28 as the repeating day, it is October 9 in the manga. ::

| Crown Clown |

Allen's synchronization ratio reached a maximum of 83% before having his Innocence destroyed by Tyki Mikk. Yet unknown to Allen, the Innocence lingered around as a hazy fog of particles; at the time, a direct reflection of his shattered state of mind. It wasn't until he came to an epiphany that he was able to seize control of his Anti-Akuma weapon once again and achieving his Innocence's true, fully-invoked form. When not activated, his arm is black and meets with his shoulder in a spiraling pattern that ends with tattoo-like emblem. Following this, the Order gave it the official designation of Crown Clown, due to its jester-like appearance when invoked.

When invoked, Crown Clown acts as a body-armored Innocence, forming a white-hooded cowl and sleeve of Innocence energy which covers his shoulders and right arm, while his left arm and hand become slender and black, clad in armor and razor sharp claws. A masquerade-style mask is always affixed to the cowl, which takes on various configurations and appearances. As before, his Innocence possesses a certain degree of sentience, but is now able to manipulate Allen's body like a marionette, fighting even when he is unable to fight, or helping him avoid attacks that his body alone could not. When Allen's synchronization ratio breaks 100%, he is able to transmute his entire left arm into a massive sword with a large cross emblazoned on the blade (this transformation, from normal to Crown Clown, also changes Allen's hairstyle from flat to a spiky rear. The hairstyle is mentioned in the manga to be looking more and more like that of a "Super Saiyan" from the anime, Dragon Ball Z). In doing so, his left shoulder is capped with a cross-shaped emblem, and his cowl usually forms a cloak to cover the missing arm.

Cross Grave || Much more powerful than its previous incarnation, Allen crucifies and annihilates his targets by etching a cross onto them with his left hand, capable of destroying even Lvl 3 Akuma with only a single talon. It can now also be used defensively, generating a shield by drawing a cross in the air.

Clown Belt || The cape of Allen's cowl is released as a webbing of Innocence-energy that can be used to grasp objects, immobilize opponents, or form hardened spikes to impale enemies. It can also be released from the sleeve and glove on Allen's right arm. The ribbons of energy were once used by Crown Clown itself to wrap around Allen's limbs and control him like a puppet when Allen was too injured to move by himself.

Crown Edge || A projectile attack which unleashes a barrage of crown-shaped rings from the clawed fingers on Allen's left hand.

Edge End || A swipe of raw destructive power dealt with Allen's fully-invoked claw.

Sword of Exorcism || The giant broadsword Allen's left arm transmutes into after he found out the true reason of his existence, that is, his left arm to save the Akuma and his right arm to help humans. Essentially, the Sword of Exorcism is an inversion of the Millennium Earl's sword, in both ability and appearance. The sword can be wielded like any other. Once invoked, the blade can exorcise evil from any vessel it strikes without any harm coming to the vessel itself if Allen chooses. If used against Level 1 to Level 3 Akuma, it vanquishes them in the same effect as the Cross Grave attack, leaving a residual glowing cross crest in the wake of the defeated Akuma. However, in the case of a Level 4 Akuma the sword carries a diminished effect. When used against a Noah, the Sword of Exorcism seemed to fully unleash his Noah within, rather than exorcise him, though it may be that the dying Noah inside him forced its powers out in order to save itself and reverse the exorcism effect. During his fight with the second Level 4 Akuma, Allen is shown with the ability to telepathically recall the Sword to himself, should it be separated from his body. It was also shown that the sword was also able to injure Allen, as well as seemingly bring forth the 14th Noah from inside his mind.

Death Ball :: When using the Sword of Exorcism, Allen can create explosion which he names, Death Ball.

Energy Arc :: When using the Sword of Exorcism, Allen can release an arc of energy at his target.

| The Cursed Pentacle Eye |

In addition to his Innocence, the reverse pentacle that scars his left eye curses Allen with the power to see the souls trapped inside Akuma. He received it after Mana died. The Earl appeared to Allen, offering to revive Mana for him. When Mana came back as an Akuma, he was angry at Allen and scratched him on the left eye, after which Allen's Innocence activated and exorcised Mana. Allen refers to his eye as "Mana" when it heals, evolves and a spirit is seen entering his eye. He comments, saying that it's "just like an Akuma" in the way that it evolves. The Earl has noticed Allen's eye and has made changes to stop the eye's power. Recently, while trapped Akuma have appeared that do not trigger the eye's activation in essence doing away with Allen's early warning system. It remains to be seen how much this change in Akuma will change Allen's eye. During Allen's reconstruction of the Ark, his curse mark became strangely distorted, the direct reason for this is unknown.

Evolved Pentacle Eye :: During the vampire incident involving the Eliade-Akuma and Arystar Krory, Allen's curse had grown stronger, resulting in his eye undergoing some dramatic changes. Resembling a sort of cogwheel monocle, this new cursed eye enables Allen to pinpoint an Akuma's position even when they are not visible to the naked eye, regardless of obstacles, from a distance of up to 300 meters away. But the most astounding change is that others close to Allen are able to see the lost souls trapped within Akuma as well. After witnessing Allen's 'world of black and white', Lavi comments that the way Allen sees the world 'is like hell on earth'. However, the cursed eye appears to lust for the destruction of Akuma, often causing pain to Allen in the middle of the night by self-activating, as though "it is a sin to be sleeping instead of destroying Akuma". The eye also seems to activate itself even when no Akuma are nearby as long as dark matter is being used, such as when Allen is caught in the Noah Tyki Mikk's vacuum.

| The Musician |

It has been revealed that Allen is the host chosen for the 14th Noah's revival, and was implanted with his memories at some point in his childhood while living with Mana, the 14th's older brother. The previous host of the 14th Noah died and the Noah came back as Allen. The memories of the 14th Noah, who implanted his memories in the first person he saw (Allen), will gradually eat away at him until, eventually, nothing remains of him and he becomes the reborn 14th Noah. As a direct result, he has begun to see the shadowy silhouette of the 14th looming over his own reflection.

Included among these memories is the power of the Musician, which allows Allen to enter the 14th Noah's room and assume control of the Ark by playing the large organ within. In doing so, he halts the download of the Akuma egg plant, reconstructs the destroyed Ark and returns those who had previously been lost in its collapse, and ultimately claims it to be used as a tool for the Black Order.

:: Note: Though the power of the Musician, Allen was able to bring back fallen comrades lost within the Ark's destruction. However, it doesn't seem that it can ultimately bring back the dead, or grant just any wish. Details on exactly how far Allen’s power as the Musician can reach are still uncertain. ::

|| Gambling/Circus Acts ||

| Gambling |

Allen has mastered the art of gambling, specifically cards/poker, through cheating techniques. He is so proficient at getting away with cheating that he once single-handedly won back every piece of clothing Arystar Krory lost during a game of strip poker as well as all of his opponents' clothes. It is assumed that he never lost a single round, and it is also assumed that he has never lost in a game of cards.

| Circus Acts |

Due to working in the circus, Allen is able to do several acts, such as juggling and balancing on balls. During the Rewinding Town Arc, he is shown juggling knives, balls, and playing cards with hands and foot while balancing on one large ball balanced on another to make money for Miranda's new job.

[character personality]: Allen is, at face value, quite the gentleman. Despite the hardships of living with a deformed arm, unusual hair, and a cursed scar on his face, Allen has grown to be a very polite individual (this is probably due to becoming adopted, as he was quite the rude child). He treats everyone with respect, and is not hostile to anyone unless called for. He only holds hatred for the Millennium Earl and his evil doings. Otherwise, he shows compassion to everyone, even Noah (i.e. try to save Tyki during the Noah’s Ark Arc) and akuma (minions of the Earl). Though he is the 'nice guy', Allen is not afraid to talk back when insulted. This is almost always apparent when interacting with Yu Kanda, as they never get along despite being fellow exorcists.

Allen, when first introduced, is polite and kind, but seems very self-conscious. He wears a bandanna around his head to cover his hair, and gloves to cover his hands. Once he becomes an exorcist, he requests that his uniform have a hood. Apparently he states the hood is to hide his golem, Timcampy, but it is revealed that the hood is requested to hide his hair. As the story progresses, Allen seems to become less concerned with hiding his hair and left hand. He no longer wears anything to cover his hair, and is seen more often than before not wearing gloves (this is most likely a combination of his grown comfort at the Order, and the changed appearance of his arm when his Innocence becomes the Crowned Clown).

When Allen first joins the Order, he seems very distant despite his politeness. His purpose of living was to 'keep walking', a lesson his adoptive father taught him. However, as he spent more time as a member of the Black Order, he befriended almost everyone, and his reason for living has now become not only to 'keep walking', but to protect the people he has come to know and love. His personality becomes less distant and polite, and grows to become casual and outspoken towards those he has formed friendships with, though still kind. At one point, comrade and friend Lenalee Lee tells Allen that he has become less polite towards everyone, happy to hear that Allen has become close to her and other members of the Order. Many times, Allen's less-polite comments tend to be humorous, such as when he compares Link to furniture to explain his ease around him, "I guess that means you're just like a piece of furniture to me these days, Link..." Therefore, it seems to be that the more polite and formal Allen is to a person, the less of a friendly, trusting relationship he has with that person. His master, General Cross Marian, comments that Allen has grown to be quite cheeky after seeing him again after Allen has become an exorcist, and that the Black Order was good for him, referring to the comfort level Allen had gained and the friends he had made during his stay with the Order.

Allen is not immune to feelings of anger or hostility, but unless he is hit first, he usually will not act out violently (unless, of course, he is fighting on a mission). He can be very emotional at times, unafraid to voice his thoughts or feelings. He holds very strong opinions about wanting to save the souls of akuma, and gets extremely upset when he is unable to. He often cries after tragic events that he cannot change. Due to his martyr and savior complex, Allen always gives the benefit of the doubt, which usually causes more trouble than he asks for: for example, trying to exorcise Tyki instead of killing him. This caused Tyki to change into something far more powerful than he was previously, nearly costing him the lives of his comrades.

Allen Walker has quirks to his personality as well. First, he has a huge appetite. While this is mostly due to the fact that his Innocence is a parasitic type, he seems to have a completely bottomless stomach. When asked how many servings of mitarashi dango (his favorite food) he could eat, he replied with "As many as I want!", beating the other parasitic type, Krory, who responded with ten. Also, it is stated that Allen can and has eaten mountains of food in ten minutes. Besides the Innocence's effect on his appetite, one could probably assume that being an abandoned child and not having food could be another reason as to why and how Allen can eat so much. His second quick is his 'black' side. Allen's black side is an entirely different personality than his usual self; Black Allen is cunning, deceitful, and dark. He has entered black mode during gambling (when admitting to Lavi that he was winning due to cheating) and being confronted with more debt from his master, Cross (when Noah demanded he pay bills Cross left them with, and Allen commented that the amount was mere 'pocket change' compared to the debts he had to pay before). During black mode, Allen is shown with a dark aura and devil's horns for humorous purposes, though characters have commented on seeing these physical changes before. Allen is not afraid to be cunning, once seducing a (male) robot, Komurin Ex, into getting in harm's way for him. One character comments that robots are not taken into account in Allen's love for humanity.
