Attention LJ GooRoos: microwave ovens

We burned out our Sharp Carousel microwave oven tonight, heating up potatoes. It lasted twelve years so no real complaints; in fact I'd like to get another Sharp, but the new models don't seem to be well-loved.

Any recommendations? Spending under $100 would be ideal.

Panasonic has always been fine for me; that's what I'd go for. The one I have now came with my condo.

Also, let me know if you're planning to wait a while to get a new one, so I will know not to bring microwaveable food when I come to hang out with Pinkerton next month. ;)

Haha, no, I'm sure we couldn't go that long without a microwave; I'm looking to stop by Target on the way home tomorrow night.

If you're looking for a mid-sized countertop model, Consumer Reports speaks highly of Kenmore. Particularly the 6633 and the 6325.

It seems to me that CR could make a fair amount of money by selling one-time access to specific reports--like I'd be willing to pay, say, $1.99 for their microwave oven report, but a monthly subscription is less attractive because I don't need their advice that frequently.

They do sell one month of online access for $5.99 or some such.

I normally just have gone to the store and bought the one I liked the price for, in the size I was looking at. I have never really had any problems with any microwave.

Aren't they all pretty much the same nowadays? It's a very mature technology and has become quite cheap, even for the huge install-in-the-cupboard models.

My folks still have a microwave that is older than me, and it's still going strong. I think it's a Toshiba.

I've always had luck with the cheapo models ($50). Yes, I've had more than one, but it's from leaving them/giving them away, not them breaking. I do only/mostly use them to heat things up, not actually cook anything except popcorn, so YMMV.
