Since you have two daughters, I propose you use them as guinea pigs to solve this dilemma once and for all. Show one of them the movies in series order (I-VI), show the other one the movies by release date. Isolate them so they do not talk to one another while in the process of finishing all six movies so you do not taint the data
( ... )
In all seriousness, you are right that the prequel trilogy was made primarily for people who have already seen the original trilogy. The best moments in TPM were the "reveals" of favorite characters... if you're a newbie, you wouldn't know who these characters were, and seeing, for example, Obi-Wan Kenobi lower his hood for the first time would just be confusing. You might even feel like you were missing out on something because it seemed like it was supposed to be a "moment" but, for you, it wasn't.
Here's another tactic:
Show your kids the Clone Wars animated movie first. Then show them Eps. IV-VI. They will be pleasantly surprised to find out that the Star Wars universe doesn't completely suck, as they had been led to believe, and maybe they will become fans.
