We're halfway through the year and these are the three snapshot moments from sports this year that are stuck in my memory banks.

Those are pretty good I guess, but what about Kurt's home run in our last Portland softball game?!?!

Another funny thing about soccer: For days, maybe even years, they'll be talking about "LANDON DONOVAN'S GOAL," and he'll be a national (semi-)hero. But really, his kicking the ball into the goal was probably the easiest part of that play. He was in the right place at the right time, but his kick didn't require any particular skill.

In fairness to Donovan, he did also set up the goal, but a lot of the time there's just some guy standing around who kicks an easy put-back into an empty goal after the goalie has fallen down stopping a brilliant shot on goal that was set up by three beautiful passes. And the garbageman gets the glory.

This is probably more true in the U.S. where we focus on "results" than in places where they watch more soccer and maybe understand it better.

The most amazing part of the goal is that the referee didn't wave it off...

What made it happen was the goalie getting the ball downfield and catching the Alegeria players stuck near the U.S. goal...Actually, I have no idea what I'm talking about. All I know was that it was pretty darn exciting.

I totally agree with you. I had never thought of "ability to throw the ball way down the field" as an important asset for a goalkeeper, but that seems to be what Tim Howard does really, really well. He could be a quarterback.
